Have you ever wondered why some people embrace change so easily while others are too scared to question their reality? Do you sometimes imagine what your life could be like if you pursued your dream job, dated your ideal partner, or embarked on a new life in a foreign country? Many people who desire to make changes in their careers and lives often find themselves held back by doubt — whether it's the fear of making a drastic change, pivoting their career, or pursuing something they never thought possible.
If this resonates with you, you're in luck. Our student, Marielly, has shown that anything is achievable with determination and hard work. Marielly moved from Brazil, where she was on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, dealing with burnout, to Portugal with no concrete plan, all in pursuit of a better life and career. With no clear direction, Marielly discovered NoCode Institute's program and quickly enrolled. Now, she's building an impressive portfolio in no-code development and is poised to embark on a new career. Marielly's journey demonstrates that passion and a commitment to your goals can help you overcome even the toughest challenges in life.
A career in biomedicine that turned upside down after the COVID-19 pandemic
Marielly has always had a passion for helping others, which led her to pursue a career in biomedicine. Her dedication to learning allowed her to attend a private medical school on a full tuition scholarship. Despite the many opportunities that came with her degree, Marielly chose to work in the public sector of epidemiology surveillance, where she could make a meaningful impact on people's lives and help as many people as she could.
Marielly worked at the clinic's administration, where she was responsible for managing and onboarding new doctors and medical staff. For two years, she enjoyed her job a lot. It was fulfilling and allowed her to help those who needed it most. However, the COVID-19 pandemic struck just two years into her new position. As she worked in epidemiology surveillance, Marielly found herself on the front lines, taking and analyzing samples and helping those affected by the pandemic.
The burnout that led to a new life abroad
As Brazil was one of the most affected countries globally, Marielly was at the epicenter of the COVID-19 health emergency. She has given all she had for 2 years during the pandemic. Marielly worked tirelessly for two years, logging 50-hour workweeks without vacation or overtime pay. Ultimately, she reached her breaking point where it was impossible to continue — she was exhausted mentally and physically. Her solution was to focus on herself for a while, which led her to move to Portugal.
She wanted to start a new life in a new country. But the reality was different. She had to go through endless bureaucracy to convert her medical degree and certificates to local ones, where she faced a lot of resistance. Despite the obstacles, Marielly saw this as an opportunity to change careers. At her previous job, she worked extensively with statistics, technology, and marketing, so she decided to reskill and learn to code.
Marielly immediately took charge of her life and enrolled in the coding course. But the learning curve was steep, which meant she had to dedicate months, if not years, to become proficient and get paid for her skills. But right then, her friend introduced Marielly to the NoCode Institute's Nocode Foundations program, which allowed her to enter the tech industry faster.
From healthcare to tech with the no-code course
Marielly wanted to start a career in tech because of the flexibility most tech positions offered. Her dream was to work remotely or travel the world freely without worrying about losing her job or needing to change a company each time she relocated.
She already had some skills from her previous job and courses she took along the way, but she wasn't comfortable with her knowledge just yet. She decided to focus on front-end web development and found NoCode Institute to be a perfect fit.
The first week was great and motivating. Marielly got to meet the community and learn about the possibilities that no code offers. The following weeks were more challenging because students had to start learning tools and applying new skills to practice. While the program was challenging, Marielly found the concept of no-code to be intuitive and familiar, similar to the blogs she created when she was younger. That allowed her to get a hold of it quickly. But it was different from what she had learned in the previous courses, "Once using traditional coding, I had to recreate a login page of Instagram. It took me half a day to make it visual. But with no code, the same thing would only take me an hour or two."
Marielly finished the course, but she didn't stop learning. During the program, she had a chance to work with NoCode Institute itself, where she had to work with completely new tools. But this experience only allowed her to embrace the new subject, enhance her skills, and build more complex projects. Also, during the course, Marielly helped her sister to build a meditation app for her practice, allowing her clients to listen to meditations and access other news more easily.
Marielly is determined to continue learning and maybe even start her own freelance business. Even though she would like to get a full-time job in a company, she knows that no code and other tech skills can provide enough flexibility to enjoy her future employment.
Achieve your goals and change your life with no code
"A job isn't your life, but it's important for you to have a job where you get to keep your personal values and do something that's important to you," said Marielly. If you feel like changing to tech is too big of a stretch from your current position, we hope Marielly's story can inspire you. The Nocode Foundations course is designed for everyone — regardless of your tech skills and background. The program is created to allow our students to combine their day jobs and master new skills. From the start, you will learn no-code tools and techniques and apply them to practice creating fascinating projects.
