How To Change From Your Comfortable Job And Follow Your Dream To Work In Tech

Do your values align with your career path? This is a question that we all should ask ourselves at some point in our lives. Many of us end up in jobs that pay well but don’t resonate with our core values. We feel like something is missing and that we are not living up to our true potential. Our student, however, chose a different path. Despite working in a high-paying industry, she decided to take a leap of faith and pursue a career in tech.

What is most important to you in a career? Many people agree that job security can be the top reason to stay in a position, even if you don't necessarily enjoy it. While job security is a compelling reason to stay, one of our students, Rita, had a different story. She change her career path after working at a well-known international company to pursue a career in tech. Pressure to always perform at the highest level were suffocating for this young and creative person. Her dream was to break free from a comfortable yet conservative career path. This led her to start the NoCode Institute’s Foundations course and initiate a transformation of her career. Rita is now climbing the new career ladder to achieve the freedom and flexibility that tech roles can offer.

A convenient career choice that soon turned sour

Rita has always been creative and keen on design and visual aesthetics. However, from a very young age, she kept hearing that creative fields don't pay much and that she should focus on something more practical. And well, she did. Rita chose to pursue a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's in Biopharmaceutical science. But right when she finished her degrees, the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world and made it difficult to land a job.

After a long search, she finally found an incredible opportunity to work remotely in a international consultancy company. For someone in her field, it was like a dream come true because the company partnered with some of the biggest brands in the industry. She thought it was the right choice for someone in her field, but she after realized something was missing.

From practicality to passion

The beginning of the new job was great — an opportunity to learn from the industry. However, the safety had its price — if she wanted to stay in the same position as she was, she had to do extra work and spend her free time learning about the industry and working overtime. Soon she also realized how competitive the field was and it didn't match her values of creativity and time flexibility.

After these realizations and leaving this job, she started job as an IT specialist for medical software. It was a job where she could explore her interests in tech. But she wanted more, and thoughts about starting something else persisted. Then one day, a friend suggested Rita sign up for a no-code course. She didn't overthink it and applied straight away. And after some time, she received an approval letter. It was a great moment for her because she had been trying to break into the tech field for some time, and after facing many rejections, this course felt like a breath of fresh air.

How finding like-minded people changed everything

Right away, Rita loved the program. She got to attend events and meet some of the most influential people in tech and business. The community impressed and inspired her the most: "The thing that impacted me the most was the people I met. They are real people with real success and happiness. They really enjoyed sharing their knowledge and experience. And it's less frightening to start something yourself when you see others doing it and that it's possible. This is especially important when you grow up in an environment that says you must earn a lot of money or be famous. But you can see that you can be very rich in many areas of your life and have the lifestyle you want. And it's all your choice."

She realized that one thing that was missing from her previous job was precisely that — like-minded and creative group of people. Getting to know others in the field allowed her to enter tech communities who shared similar opinions about work and life. After dealing with conservative beliefs her whole life, knowing that work and life can be different opened a new world for Rita. And while it was tough, as she had to study at night and on weekends, she was so motivated nothing could have stopped her.

The program itself was also something close to her heart. As Rita says, she's a very visual person, and it's easier for her to create something when she can visualize and see it, "It helped me a lot to get to know new terms and gave the structure for what I already knew." Most no-code tools are based on visuals and allow you to see right away what the end product would look like.

Throughout the course, she collaborated with a company to develop an information database. It proved to be a straightforward task for her as she was already familiar with the necessary tools. Additionally, she assisted the company in implementing email automation. Working alongside the communication department provided her with a valuable opportunity to learn from different perspectives and engage with the company from the inside.

Even though Rita enjoyed no-code development, she's not jumping straight into the job market. Now, she's focusing on building her portfolio, creating a professional resume, and networking on Linkedin. But what she really dreams of is the freedom that many tech positions can provide. She wants to travel the world and maybe even work in a foreign country. Rita wants to find a job or a working model that matches her values: to earn enough to live comfortably, but most importantly, to choose the people to work with. Also, she has many ideas for combining her experience in the medical field with no-code skills to benefit more people.
